Ford and Apple team up to bring Maps EV routing to the F 150 Lightning

Drivers of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck will soon be able to use Apple Maps to navigate and receive suggestions on where to charge along the way.

The CarsDirect crew discovered the function in a Ford dealer message sent out this week, which stated that all Lightning owners would have access to it, however it requires Apple iOS 15.4 or newer and Ford Power-Up 6.3.0 or higher.

As Ford explained: “Apple Maps will use your iPhone to read vehicle and battery data when connected to CarPlay and assist you on your journey by adding chargers into your trip as necessary.”

The Apple Maps EV feature isn’t new to Ford EVs, but it is new to the F 150 Lightning . It was released last spring for the Ford Mustang Mach-E, and it covered all 2022 and 2023 models, as well as some models dating back to the 2021 model year, depending on the software version of the Sync 4A infotainment system.

Google incorporated electric-car chargers to its navigation system for the first time in 2018, although they were largely merely points of interest at the time. It only announced a higher level of data on charging stations earlier this year, allowing some EVs with Google Automotive built-in system to access their state-of-charge and range estimates, and thus similar dynamic navigation with charging stops.
