Alibaba wants the world. A report by Capital FM claims the firm has launched its mobile browser in Kenya targeting to attract the around 40 per cent of 38m mobile subscribers who have smartphones.
Just a little history and data, UCWeb was founded in 2004 as a mobile browser maker. The UC Browser has over 65.9% market share in China and the leading browser in India with over 34% market share according to StatCounter. Alibaba Group acquired UCWeb in June 2014 UCWeb.
Just like in China and India, UC Browser is targeting to attact the youthful mobile broandband users who are exponentially growing in Africa. It’s major competition will be Opera Mini which has a huge population of mobile users in Africa followed by Mozilla Firefox and Chrome.
Speaking to Capital FM, the Kenny Ye, General Manager of Global Market, Alibaba Mobile Business Group said, “Like their Asian counterparts, African growing population of young mobile users is a mobile-first population and users adopt their smartphones as their primary, and most of the time, only internet-enabled device.”
