Apple Wins $30 Million Deal To Supply iPads To Schools In L.A.

Source: LA Times:

Apple Inc. won a $30-million contract Tuesday from the L.A. Unified School District, paving the way for the company to provide every student with an iPad in the nation’s second-largest school system.

The Board of Education voted 6 to 0 on Tuesday to approve the contract after hearing senior staff laud Apple’s product as both the best in quality and the least expensive option that met the district’s specifications.

Tuesday’s vote authorized an iPad rollout at 47 campuses. However, by choosing Apple as the sole vendor, the district also made a de facto commitment to spend hundreds of millions of dollars with the Cupertino, Calif.-based digital giant over the next two years.

The tablet computer by Apple “received the highest scoring by the students and the teachers,” who took part in testing different devices, said Deputy Supt. Jaime Aquino.

Board members Steve Zimmer and Richard Vladovic expressed the most concerns. Zimmer questioned whether devices other than tablets were more fitting for high school students. Vladovic worried that the board lacked detailed information on costs.

“This is one of the most high-profile contracts this board will ever approve,” Zimmer said. This contract is “as big as they come.”

“I can sleep tonight with my conscience clear,” Aquino responded, “that you did the right thing for kids.”

The district is paying $678 per device — higher than tablets available in stores — but the machines will be pre-loaded with educational software. The price does not include a keyboard, which may be necessary for older students.

Vladovic noted that he had dropped and broken two iPads and that students also would break them.

The three-year warranty includes free replacement machines up to 5% of the value of the purchase, he was told.

A Microsoft representative urged the board to pilot more than one product and not to rely on one platform. Doing so could cut off the district from future price reductions and innovations, said Robyn Hines, senior director of state government affairs for Microsoft.

Hines also noted that more businesses still use Microsoft platforms, and that students should be exposed to machines they will encounter in the workplace.

“A one-size-fits-all approach” would limit important options, she said.

But district staff countered that Apple offered the superior product and some students shouldn’t have to use a lesser one. They also said that students and teachers often change schools and should not have to learn a different platform.

Teachers union president Warren Fletcher urged a delay in the vote and said resources should be focused on rehiring needed staff.

Officials said they opposed a delay in part because new state and national tests will be taken on computers, and they don’t want Los Angeles students to lack the necessary experience with them.

Chief Strategy Officer Matt Hill also noted that the funding is from facility bonds, which can’t be used to hire regular school staff.

This source of funding also has been controversial because school bonds are typically used for construction and paid off over decades.

The teachers union also criticized L.A. schools Supt. John Deasy for appearing in an Apple promotional video prior to the bidding process.

Deasy said he abstained from involvement in the decision — not because of the video but because he owned a small amount of stock in Apple. He left the board room prior to consideration of the contract for the same reason.

Board member Bennett Kayser and general counsel David Holmquist also left the chamber because they own some stock in Apple.

Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE Advanced Version Coming

samsung_logoSamsung, is set to launch LTE Advanced version of Galaxy S4, it is barely two months since it  launched the S4.

In an interview with Reuters the co-CEO JK Shin said that, Samsung is planning to sell a version of its Galaxy S4 smart phone running the LTE Advanced technology this month.

Shin said the phone will launch in South Korea and also that the company is currently making discussions with several overseas carriers, which he did not name, to take the phone.

Being the first commercial launch of LTE Advanced phone, it offers twice the speeds of existing LTE systems and will be powered by Qualcomm chips.

After testing a LTE Advanced network in April, the Korean operator SK said it aims to launch commercial service in September.

Shin displayed little concern about sales prospects for the S4, which hit stores in late April. “S4 sales remain strong. It’s selling far stronger than the (Galaxy) S III … and the new LTE-Advanced (4G) phone will be another addition to our high-end segment offerings that ensure healthy profit margins,” He said.

He declined to provide forecasts for S4 sales and said that the new S4 would be slightly more expensive than the current one.

LG Launches Door To Door After Sales Service In Kenya

Mr. Moses Marji, LG East Africa Marketing Manager (left); Mr. Youngmin Son, the LG Service Centre Director, East and Central Africa (centre) and Mr. Sunggeun Kang, LG Service Centre Managing Director showcase a washing machine technology dubbed Direct Drive at the LG Service Centre.

LG has today unveiled a door to door after sales initiative dubbed LG Service for all its customers in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret and Nakuru towns.

LG will send its technicians to service LG appliances in case of damage or malfunction to its customers homes who will no longer to ferry electronic appliances to LG service centres.

According to Mr Youngmin Son, the LG Service Centre Director, East and Central Africa, “All one will need to do is dial 0800, a toll free number, and give a location of where you live so that we can schedule your request.”

The maximum response time is 24 hours and everything including transport, diagnosis and spare parts is free for electronics that are still within the warranty period.  LG equally give a warranty of three months after they repair any item.

The LG Service programme is a premium service and customers will therefore pay for a fee for in-home service, labour and parts in case of any replacement. “Customers within 5 km will be charged Ksh600 while those further than 5 km will pay Ksh1200,” explains Mr Son.

He observed that ferrying faulty homes appliances, such as refrigerators and washing machines, over long distance often aggravates the damage, or causes more wear and tear during transportation. “We are not only giving the customer a piece of mind and convenience; we want to ensure longevity of the products you buy from LG.”

The programme follows another innovative service that LG pioneered in Kenya in 2011 dubbed Care and Delight Bus free service which tours various parts of the country offering service clinics to LG customers with no labour charges. “Globally, this idea was first introduced in Kenya but we now have similar buses in Sudan, Zambia and Ethiopia.”

According to Mr Son, the buses have helped deliver quality services to far-flung areas where users of LG electronics have limited or no access to the company’s authorized service centres.

LG is one of the world’s leading producers of flat panel TVs, mobile devices, air conditioners, washing machines and refrigerators.

CEO Weekends:Econo Heat Kenya Limited Introduces Wall-mounted Panel Heaters

eHeater_just wallEcono Heat Kenya Limited, am arm of Econo heat S.A founded in 1990 in Cape Town South Africa producing 1200 to 1600 units per day has introduced into the Kenyan market of a wall-mounted panel heater.

ECONO-HEAT™ wall panel heaters are sold in 38 countries worldwide and offer out-of-the-way wall mounting and are an economic way of providing efficient room heating at a low cost. Using natural convection technology, heat is mainly generated behind the heater in the space between the panel and the wall, which leads to an efficient up draught of heated air circulated into the room. This principle of convection means that about 90% of the heat comes from the back of the panel, while only 10% is radiated from the front of the panel. This form of background heating is extremely economical, safe and efficient.

The energy-saver ECONO-HEAT™ wall panel heater is designed as an alternative to conventional bar heaters and other forms of high output heaters that use large amounts of electricity. It operates at relatively low surface temperatures and uses minimal electricity.

ECONO-HEAT™ wall panel heaters are designed to be left on for long periods of time, giving you comfortable background heat at a low cost. This is similar in concept to a central heating system – yet far less expensive

There are numerous advantages to using ECONO-HEAT™ electric wall panel heaters. They save on floor space, are safer to use around children and pets because of its low thermal conductivity, and can be painted to match any décor with PVA or emulsion type paint (do not use oil based paint)

Other benefits include;

  • Energy saving – save up to 50% on your heating costs!
  • Quick and easy to install
  • Safer for children and pets
  • Ultra slim and compact design
  • Inexpensive to acquire, inexpensive to run
  • Whole room heater as opposed to freestanding locality heaters
  • Energy saving – save up to 50% or more on your heating costs
  • Efficiently warms a room of approximately 12m² (9m² in very cold climates)
  • Uses efficient convection technology
  • Non-flammable. non-combustible
  • No drying of the air. No oxygen burnt up
  • Asbestos free. Contains no harmful chemicals or metals
  • Safer for children and pets – no exposed elements, gas or fans

PC Maker Asus Ships 5 million Nexus 7 Pieces | Takes Third Position In Global Tablet Market

Nexus Tablet ASUS shipped 2.7 million units compared to just over 700,000 units in the same period last year thanks to its Android based Nexus 7 which has achieved over 5 million in sales moving it into third spot of worldwide tablets sales in Q1 2013.

Asus pegs its success partly to Google’s Android open-source OS  which was the most favoured operating system amongst consumers with 27.8 million units shipped. Asus also says the growing appetite for tablets was a factor with the market growing 142 percent year over year in the last three months.

ASUS jumped to third position beating out Amazon the makers of the kindle fire and grabbing a 5.5% market share.

This is an impressive performance by the motherboard manufacturer despite a slowdown in shipped devices. The industry sold 49.2 million units in the last quarter compared to 52.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Asus earlier this month released the Fonepad, the first android tablet that runs the new Intel processor and is a budget friendly option in the market. Built upon the successes of the ASUS 7” android tablet range, Fonepad brings real voice capabilities to a tablet, incorporating all phone and tablet functions into a single device.
