Launched two years ago, Showmax this year set up its East Africa headquarters in Nairobi to support further expansion in the region and aims to invest more in the region to boost both its local content inventory and create opportunities for local producers.

Today, the Naspers-owned subscription-based video on demand service anoounced it has added a new way to watch TV shows and movies with no contract and no ads. The firm said it has made available the Showmax app for the Xbox One console as a free download on the Xbox Store.

To get the Showmax app on the Xbox One, new users sign up for Showmax via www.showmax.com for a 14-day free trial without any contracts using an email address and secure password. Go to the Store tab on the Xbox One and search tab on the right-hand side of the screen and search for Showmax. Then install the app and sign in to the app using the same email and password you used to sign up for Showmax. Then you can choose to pin the Showmax app to your home screen, highlight the app tile, press the menu button and then select “pin to home”.

Though available in more than 70 countries, the service has had little impact to Netflix’s user base locally and its partnerships with telcos and multiple integrations for voucher payment, mobile payment, and banks haven’t saved it. Showmax has a data deal with Safaricom which gives its users a special data package at discounted prices.

The service goes further to allow downloads of up to 25 shows to smartphones and tablets to watch later offline., supports AirPlay and Chromecast and DStv Explora and Android TV platforms.
