Nigeria’s Domain Name Registrar Targeting Over 250,000 Domain Names This Year

urlThe Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) has announced that it is targeting to register over 250,000 domain names by the end of 2014 and as well give out 100,000 domain names free from June in a move to get almost every citizen interested with a permanent online address.

Speaking to Nigeria News Agency  NIRA’S President Mrs. Mary Uduma said that out of the 50,000 domain names that had been registered by December last year, NIRA was planning to give away 100,000 domain names free of charge and register some more to reach its 250, 000 target. It will also hold a “Domain Name Fiesta” later this month to try and sign up as many users as possible.

NIRA says it will work with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to ensure that those who register companies also register domain names so as to launch individuals and businesses into the Internet, help build local content and also create employment.

Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) was founded on March 23, 2005 as a stakeholder-led organisation, charged with the management of the Nigeria’s country code Top Level Domain Name (ccTLD), dot ng. Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) is a Nigerian company mandated to regulate the formation and management of companies in Nigeria.
