Nokia will also modernize and expand Safaricom’s 2G and 3G network infrastructures countrywide.
The firm announced last year that its LTE Advanced network will offer peak speeds of up to 100Mbps, which is more than twice the speed offered on 3G technology making it possible for customers to download and upload files faster, as well as enjoy buffer-free streaming of audio and video. The firm had said it will intially roll out the 4G service in Nairobi and Mombasa then countrywide.
Launching the network before its video-on-demand service, Mr. Collymore said Safaricom would supply affordable 4G-enabled devices such as smartphones, routers and modems to the market, with a sub Ksh 9,000 phone planned for this year.
Bernard Najm, Vice President and Head of Middle East and Africa, Nokia Networks, said: “With this ambitious network modernization, we provide Safaricom with the highest quality network in Kenya. Our cutting-edge solutions and services help Safaricom offer a truly rewarding service experience to its customers.”
