The Infinix Zero series represents the flagship line of the company. Its main focus is usually top notch photography coupled with mid-range to high-end specs at an affordable price. Last night, the company released the new Infinix Zero 5, will it deliver on the main aspects of the Zero series? Let’s find out.

First off, the company launched two variants like they did last year, there is an Infinix Zero 5 and Zero 5 Pro. The difference between them is simply internal storage, 64 GB for the Zero 5 and 128 GB for the 5 Pro. Both are expandable via micro SD card; all other specifications between them are similar.

The Zero 5 and the 5 Pro comes with a 5.98 inch Full HD (1920*1080) IPS display. The aspect ratio remains at 16:9, so no fancy Galaxy S8-like full screen technology yet. Unlike last year, there is no smaller variant; both the Zero 5 and the 5 Pro are capped at the same size.

The design has been changed as well. The Zero 5 and the 5 Pro are built on a metallic unibody rear panel that seamlessly joins with the front glass panel on a 2.5D slight screen curvature. The back has a strip at the top that holds the dual rear cameras and the dual –LED flash, in a design language similar to that of the Huawei  P10.

Speaking of cameras, this year the company really outdid themselves. You have dual cameras at the back with the primary one being a 12MP Sony IMX 386 sensor (which is marketed to be a wide-angle but really isn’t) with f/2.0 aperture while the other one is a 13MP f/2.6 telephoto sensor that is capable of 2.0X optical zoom. Rest assured that zooming into subjects and also making portrait mode photos will be stunning with such a setup.

Flip to the front and an upgrade was done as well, you will get a 16MP selfie camera with LED flash for illuminating dark environments.

Peek underneath the screen and you will find an Octa core 2.6GHz Mediatek P25 chipset that is coupled with a whopping 6 GB of RAM. The system runs on Android 7.0 Nougat under a new XOS 3.0 with Oero update promised.

Battery capacity has increased as well, there is a huge 4350mAh battery that – for the first time – will be charged via a USB-Type C cable on an Infinix device. Luckily, you can use traditional micro USB chargers as well thanks to a USB-C to normal USB-A converter that comes in the box. The remaining specs include support for dual SIM slots, 4G LTE and a 3.5 mm audio jack; all enclosed in a slim 7.95mm body.

The pricing will be as follows Kshs 28,999 ($290) for Infinix Zero 5 and Kshs 31,999 ($320) for the Infinix Zero 5 Pro.  The available colors include Champagne Gold, Sandstone Black and Bordeaux Red. The Pro has a Black version that comes with shiny gold accents.
