Mawingu, an internet service provider (ISP) operating in rural areas of Kenya, plans to extend its internet coverage to 25 additional counties.

According to local dailies, the expansion follows a successful funding round in February, which raised Sh1.12 billion from international investors.

“We are proud to announce that we have closed our Series B round, raising a total of 9 million USD, thanks to the collaboration of our new investor InfraCo Africa, and our existing partners E3, and FMO,” noted the ISP.

With this expansion, Mawingu will expand its operations to a total of 47 devolved units across the country, a significant increase from the current 22.

The company’s objective is, “To make affordable internet accessible to a larger number of Kenyans,” and this expansion is a key element of their mid-term growth strategy.

Over the past four months, Mawingu has connected towns that were previously neglected by major players in various counties, including Kilifi, Kwale, Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisii, and Migori.

Moreover, the company has successfully connected an additional 2,000 homes and businesses in seven new counties.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mawingu, Farouk Ramji stated that the company’s customers consume an average of 8GB of data per day.

“This translates to significant cost savings on internet bills compared to traditional 4G networks.”

According to Mr Ramji, Mawingu customers only need to pay Sh2,500 per month to enjoy unlimited and meaningful internet access, a fraction of what they would typically pay other providers for a similar service.

Established in 2012 in Nanyuki, below the foothills of Mount Kenya, Mawingu is a rural ISP.

The company has already connected over 9,500 homes and businesses and serves 300,000 hotspot users across the nation.

Mawingu’s expansion is a highly anticipated development for rural Kenyans who have been underserved in terms of internet connectivity.

The company’s affordable pricing and reliable service make it an attractive option for individuals living in areas where traditional providers do not offer coverage.

Mawingu has a presence in 15 counties, notably in the Mount Kenya region. Also, it has expanded into Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir, and Voi towns.
