Safaricom Plc has appointed Boniface Mungania as Chief Financial Services Officer, effective Nov. 1, following regulatory approval, placing a longtime company executive in charge of its M-PESA and financial services business.
Mungania will report directly to the chief executive officer. He replaces Esther Waititu, who left the company in July after nearly three years in the position.
He joined Safaricom in 2007 as a customer care representative and has since held several senior positions, including Senior Manager for M-PESA Business Development, Head of M-PESA Products and Services Development, Payments Tribe Lead and Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation.
His appointment is part of a wider series of leadership changes across Safaricom and its Ethiopian subsidiary this year.
In August, Safaricom appointed Caroline Wambugu as Group Lead for Finance Controls, Performance and Investor Relations, expanding her responsibilities to include financial controlling, reporting, tax, treasury, shared services and credit collections.
She previously headed finance planning, analysis and investor relations.
The company also appointed two Vodacom Group executives, Mariam Cassim and Matimba Mbungela, as non-executive directors on its board in August. Cassim leads Vodacom’s fintech business, while Mbungela is its chief human resources officer. They replaced outgoing directors James Ludlow and John Kipngetich Mosonik.
In Ethiopia, Safaricom Telecommunications PLC appointed Samuel Munyua as Chief Finance Officer, also effective Nov. 1. Munyua previously served as Safaricom Group Financial Controller, having joined the Kenyan operation in 2021.
He brings more than 20 years of finance experience, including previous roles at KCB Bank and Barclays Bank Kenya.
The appointments come as Safaricom continues to develop its financial services operations across East Africa, with M-PESA remaining a central part of its business.
