Airtel Launches Mobile Banking with Equatorial Commercial Bank in Kenya

Equatorial Commercial Bank MD Mr. Sammy Itemere and Airtel Kenya MD Mr. Shivan Bhargava formally announce the partnership between ECB and Airtel Kenya that will see ECB customers access mobile banking services on their mobile phones via the Airtel Money platform

Just after the signing of mobile banking agreement with Equity Bank, the ink has not dried and Airtel has partnered with Equatorial Commercial Bank with the same product.

“Mobile banking is a fast and growing phenomenon,” Airtel Kenya MD, Mr. Shivan Bhargava said at the launch event. “With mobile banking business people can analyze their business transaction better thatn the cash transaction.”

With this product, customers can now pay bills, do deposits and withdrawal in collaboration with all the Airtel Money agents across the country.

“Mobile banking has done a lot to do with banking inclusion in the country,” Equatorial Commercial Bank Managing Director, Sammy Itemere said.  “Through this partnership with airtel money we are offering our customers an opportunity to access the bank from anywhere in the country.”

This new product is also targeted at business people in the country. “We are beginning to focus on the retail and sme sector. It will allow them to be able to make payments conveniently to their suppliers,” Itemere said.

Bhargava said that these new collaborations with various banks has a bigger endeavor to increase the users of Airtel Money across the country.

According to recent Communications Commission of Kenya statistics, there are about 23 million mobile money transfer users in the country.
