There are 4.5 billion people at the base of the economic pyramid (BOP) in 92 developing countries and emerging markets and they form a significant market for consumer goods including health products worth $5 trillion (measured in 2005 purchasing power parity (PPP) dollars). Health products and services alone account for approximately $243 billion globally. The BOP in East Africa dominate spending on medical goods and services in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with an annual spend of $5.9 billion – almost six times as much as West Africa ($1.1 billion) .
