It will now be possible for Rwanda subscribers to make cross-border mobile money transactions to Kenya or Tanzania after MTN Rwanda and signed an agreement.
The New Times Rwanda reports that with theĀ deal, customers will make use of the M-Pesa platform for transactions within weeks .
Norman Munyampundu, the head of mobile money at MTN Rwanda said they are testingĀ the service as they work on country-specific contracts to conclude the deal.
āWe are still testing the service with Safaricomās M-Pesaā¦However, we will launch mobile money transactions between MTN Rwanda and Vodacom in the coming weeks after finalising the paperwork,ā he said.
He added that the new dealĀ is part of the firmās wider plan to facilitate cross-border mobile money transfers in East Africa and simplify the cost of doing business.
Other countries that will enjoy similar services include Tanzania, the DRC, Mozambique and Zambia.
MTN and Bharti Airtel are also in the process of enabling cross-border mobile money transfers betweenĀ Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda In November.
