Several months ago, OPPO released the F3, it was received with much fan-fare especially due to the dual front facing camera. The selfie camera setup was so unique it gave more credence to the name “Selfie Expert” that OPPO is so fond of using. Fast forward to the last week of October and the company released a sequel, the OPPO F5, does it have what it takes to push on the selfie legacy? Read on to find out.
Firstly, the device has a fresh new design overhaul, it comes with the trending full screen 18:9 aspect ratio display that is akin to that of the LG G6. The bezels have been reduced to a minimum, resulting to a 6 inch device whose dimensions are same as those of last year’s 5.5 inch OPPO F3. The resolution has remained at Full HD but the pixels have increased slightly due to the aspect ratio (1080 x 2160 FHD+). Under the hood you get a faster and more battery efficient octacore Mediatek P23 (16nm) and an option of 4GB RAM plus 32GB internal storage or 6GB +64GB, the latter will be called the OPPO 6GB and only comes in red. Battery life has remained at 3200mAh but will last longer due to the more energy frugal CPU.
I was saving the best part for last, the cameras. This time, OPPO dropped the dual selfie shooter in favor of high resolution sensor, 20MP to be exact with f/2.0 aperture size. It will be assisted by AI to better apply beautification features. According to OPPO, ‘the software technology uses 200 positioning spots, that accentuates your facial landmarks and contours to enhance the symmetry between features like your eyes, nose, cheekbones and jawline to create the perfectly refined and natural selfie. Its beauty-iris tool ensures that your eyes will shine brighter in any photo.’ Moreover, the front camera will enable Face Unlock feature. In case you prefer the fast and more secure fingerprint scanning option, you can find one on the F5’s rear panel below the camera.
At the back, you a 16MP camera with a bright f/1.8 aperture lens. With such an aperture, you can expect superior night-time pictures; this was apparently one of the weak points of the F3 as we noted in our review.
The device is already available in OPPO store for preorder and other third party leading retailers in gold and black colors. Markets in Africa will get the launch in a few days. The 4GB version will be price at $310, the cost for the 6GB is yet to be announced.
