Alongside the P30 Pro, the P30 and a bunch of accessories, Huawei had a surprise during their launch event in Paris earlier this week: smart glasses. This were probably the most unusual of the announcements.
The new Smart Eyewear series are built in partnership with Gentle Monster.
They offer similar functionality to Google Glass, but only offer audio output, just like the Bose AR glasses. Naturally, Gentle Monster were in charge of how the smart specs looked, while Huawei handled the technology inside.
There won’t be a single model, but a collection of glasses with integrated electronics. Each pair comes with dual microphones for picking up your voice. That’ll be useful for calls, or interacting with the smart assistant.
There are also small speakers hidden inside the frame, which are designed so that only the wearer can hear them. These speakers can be used for anything from directions and phone calls, to watching films on your phone.
You’ll be able to answer calls by tapping the arm of the glasses. The arms house directional mics and speakers, as well as batteries that can be charged wirelessly through the companion case leather case with USB-C port at the bottom. Surprisingly, it has a pretty big 2,200mAh battery inside, this should give some good user time.
All frames are rated as IP67 water and dust resistant, so you can wear them at the beach or in the rain.
We’re really excited by this announcement, as they look like the best pair of smart glasses yet with enough functionality to make them useful. At the same time they are stylish enough that you’ll actually want to wear them.
Huawei teased the glasses at the P30 press conference in Paris, but the glasses won’t be available before July 2019.
