This Week In A Summary: Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 Unveiled, Samsung Hosts Take Your Child to Work From Home Day and more

1.Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 Unveiled

Samsung has just introduced a new laptop range, including two models with AMOLED screen during its press conference held on April 28th. On the menu are several devices: the Galaxy Book, intermediate model, and the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360, flagships of the range.

Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, two future kings

They are the ones who will now embody the top of the basket in the South Korean manufacturer’s range of laptops. Their Super AMOLED display distinguishes the Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 in 13.3 or 15.6 inches, a technology still scarce on this type of product. As for the “360” model, opts for a two-in-one format, with a detachable touch screen that can be used as a tablet and offers 5G. It is light, with 1063 grams on the scale for the 13-inch variant and 1423 grams for the 15-inch model. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Book Pro acts as a featherweight with only 868 grams in the 13-inch version and 1045 grams in 15 inches.

On the performance side, these computers offer 11th-generation Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors but are content with the Intel Iris X built-in GPU-side graphics processor. The Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360 will be available at the end of the year in Kenya. Their Kenyan prices have not yet been disclosed, but they will be sold from $1,469.99(158,464.92 KES) and $1,599.99 (172,478.92 KES)internationally, respectively.

Galaxy Book, more conventional

The other laptop presented by Samsung is a little more conventional than the “Pro” models, but it is still interesting. For example, the Galaxy Book offers a large 15.6-inch Full HD slab, 11th-generation Intel Core processors, NVME storage, and even a discreet NVIDIA graphics card or optional 4G modem. It will also be released at the end of the year and, internationally, it will be available from $859(92,600 KES).

2.Samsung Second Anual Event:Take Your Child to Work From Home Day

On April 22nd Samsung-based firm in the US hosted it’s second annual virtual “Take Your Child to Work From Home Day. The motive of the event is to give children exposure to what they expect to be in the future and reinforce the value of education.

Two sessions marked the streaming. For the first time-lapse youngest members from Samsung, the team was introduced to the executive team. In addition, the children did an interactive session via Kahoot to equip them with Samsung knowledge in terms of knowing more about innovative products, e.g., Galaxy A series.

Jude Buckley and Michelle Crossan, Executive and senior vice president respectively, chaired the second session successfully by educating both the parents and their journey to success while also celebrating Samsung’s history and achievements.

3.Samsung PM1653: Enterprise SSD with SAS 24G and up to 30.72TB

Samsung launched the PM1653, a new enterprise SSD that supports the SAS-4 interface, which is not really new but still rarely represented, aka SAS 24G. Compared to the PM1643a with SAS 12G, the performance is roughly doubled.

Kioxia had the first SAS-4 SSD

In 2017, SAS-4 was adopted with a 22.5 Gbps symbol rate or 2,400 MB/s net throughputs, but products with the interface were long delayed. One of the first server SSDs with SAS 24G introduced Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory) with the PM6 series last year.

Samsung’s PM1653 to reach 4,300 MB/s

Only now is Samsung following a counterpart whose essential data is not only similar in the interface. Like the Kioxia PM6, the Samsung PM1653 is offered up to 30.72 TB in a high 2.5-inch form factor. Both dual-port SSDs offer a maximum data transfer rate of more than 4,000 MB/s reading via line bundling. Samsung cites up to 4,300 MB/s for sequential reading and 3,800 MB/s for sequential writing. which is about twice as fast as the PM1643a (2,100/2,000 MB/s). The IOPS for random reading has also been doubled to a maximum of 800,000. Depending on the version, the PM1653 should reach 135,000 or 270,000 IOPS without a choice.

Compared to the new PCIe 4.0 SSDs. However, the performance values are far from impressive because of Samsung’s PM1733 in the same form factor, but with U.2 connector (PCIe 4.0 x4), it brings up to 7,000 MB/s and over a million IOPS.

While Samsung’s product pages for the PM1653 reveal few technical details, images show the structure with (partially) multiple boards, a large-area controller, and support capacitors to protect against data loss in the event of power loss protection. NAND flash memory is said to be Samsung’s sixth-generation 3D NAND, aka “V-NAND” V6, with 1xx layer architecture. The successor V-NAND V7 with 160+ layers, which Samsung introduced a year ago, is not yet in use.

With up to 30.72 TB in the second half of the year

Samsung says the PM1653 will be available with storage capacities ranging from 800 GB to 30.72 TB. However, test samples will be delivered to “selected customers” before the Enterprise SSD mass production begins in the second half of 2021. Prices are not communicated publicly in this segment as usual. However, these should be significantly higher due to the doubled speed than those of the Samsung PM1643a, which costs between ksh 32,555 (960 GB) and ksh 364 621 (15.36 TB) in free trade.
