ClinicPesa, a Ugandan fintech focused on health, just received $250,000 in the Swiss-Re Foundation competition – People’s Choice Award. In Uganda and the surrounding region, the startup provides increased healthcare access to the uninsured.
Uganda currently lacks a national healthcare insurance plan for its citizens, forcing them to pay for their healthcare out of pocket. ClinicPesa takes advantage of mobile money infrastructure to offer flexible savings programs as well as loan top-ups that enable access to high-quality healthcare services.
ClinicPesa provides consumers with access to healthcare financing, that is more convenient and affordable than the traditional insurance, through a digital micro-loans and savings platform for setting aside dedicated healthcare funds used to offset medical bills and purchase drugs in time of need at ClinicPesa’s registered clinic, hospital or pharmacy.
ClinicPesa is a Villgro Africa portfolio company that has previously received US$ 500,000 in funding from GIZ, D-Labs, MIT, and FSDU. MTN Uganda and Equity Bank Limited are scheduled to introduce their final product in the near future. This collaboration involves more than 1,400 hospitals, pharmacies, and clinics.
Maternal screening is also available through ClinicPesa. To enhance corporate expansion in Uganda, the company is working on a US$2 million syndicated round.
