Local language edtech Ambani Africa has won multiple awards at the MTN Business App of the Year Awards in 2021. The app received the titles of Best Gaming Solution, Best Educational, and Best South African solution It also received R1 million in prize money for winning the Best App of the Year award.
Wanda Matandela, Chief Business Enterprise Officer of MTN Business, said in a statement, “Congratulations to Ambani Africa.”
“The combination of their innovative approach and the prize money should put them on the fast track to growth in their mission to solve the literacy gap faced by our country and encourage parents and kids to embrace their indigenous languages.”
In 2021, the annual app awards attracted over 1000 entries, marking the tenth anniversary of the competition. Small startups to well-known brands like Takealot and Afrihost were among the winners.
Ambani Africa is an educational learning portal for children who speak South Africa’s indigenous languages. It is available as a mobile app. For children aged two to eight, the app includes learning games, series, and songs.
Children can learn isiZulu, isiXhosa, Setswana, English, Sepedi, Tshivenda, and English, among other languages. In addition, Ambani Africa provides online tutoring for children aged six and up, as well as conversational classes.
The Johannesburg-based company also offers a range of books that children can view using Augmented Reality through the app (AR).
Mukundi Lambani, the founder of Ambani Africa, was declared the winner of the I’M IN accelerator’s third cohort in July.
Ambani is learner-centered, and uses games to facilitate practice while also assisting parents and teachers in making learning possible for their children. The Ambani Africa app can be downloaded from Google Play, Apple App Store, and Huawei AppGallery (isiZulu only).
