At CES 2022, Sony unveiled their first electric SUV concept, the Vision-S 02. The car was designed from lessons learned from the Vision-S 01 which was a sedan they revealed back in CES 2020.

The new SUV is around the same dimensions with the Tesla Model Y, 4.9 meters long, 1.93 meters wide and 1.65 meters tall. It has a generous wheelbase of 3.03 meters. According to Sony, it can accommodate up to 7 passengers.

The company announced it will form a new division called Sony Mobility which will be tasked with exploring the EV market. While revealing their first car two years ago, Sony was working with Austria’s Magna- Steyr to make sure the sedan was road worthy. It is unclear if Magna will be collaborating with Sony Mobility on the new SUV.

Two motors will be powering the Vision-S 02, each will produce 268 horsepower just like in the sedan. The SUV will run on 20 inch wheels and have a weight of 5,467 pounds. Details on the battery size and range were not announced. However, the SUV was stated to have a top speed of 180km/h or 112mph. The acceleration numbers were not revealed but considering that their sedan runs on the same 268 horsepower dual motors and achieved 4.8 seconds from 0 to 62mph (0-100mph), we are expecting the SUV to not beat this figure due to its added weight.

Inside the SUV will be three screens integrated into a single housing spanning the full width of the dash. Rear seats will also have multimedia displays too. Sony has been a leader in the entertainment sector, we can only imagine how their multimedia offering in their electric vehicle will excel.

Many automakers make use of Sony cameras to implement driver assistance features and self driving systems; it will be exciting to see what the company pulls off in their own car.
