A new plug-in hybrid powertrain will be available for the fifth generation Lexus RX, the RX 450h+. The new variant has an electric range of 35 miles (56 km) on top of the combustion engine.

The RX 450h+ has the same PHEV system as the plug-in hybrid Toyota RAV4 Prime which means it has a 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder gas engine under the hood, plus two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack. This combination produces a peak output of 304 horsepower (227 kilowatts), allowing the electric luxury SUV to go from 0-60 miles per hour (0-96 kilometres per hour) in 6.2 seconds. The maximum speed is electrically limited to 124 mph (200 kph). In addition, plug-in hybrid powertrain sends power to all four wheels.

The new SUV incorporates a 6.6-kilowatt onboard charger that can juice up the 18.1-kWh battery pack using a 240-volt outlet in two and a half hours.

With a starting price of $70,080 the RX 450h+ comes standard with premium features including a head-up display, leather upholstery, heated and cooled front and back seats, and a panoramic sunroof.

The new RX 450h+ will come with eight exterior colours; Eminent White Pearl, Cloudburst Grey, Iridium, Caviar, Matador Red Mica, Copper Crest, Nori Green Pearl, and Nightfall Mica. On top of that there are standard 21-inch 20-spoke wheels.

Lastly, according to Lexus, the RX450h+ will be available in dealerships before the end of the year.
