Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra launched with many exciting upgrades and it seems there are more features backed into the device that are coming in future software updates. One such feature is crash detection, a system that alerts emergency services when it realizes you have been involved in a car crash.
A keen developer discovered the system code for the “Car Crash Detect Wakeup” sensor buried inside a OneUI 6.1 hidden system app called MoccaMobile. Apparatently, the feature is also hidden in the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
According to reports, this feature relies on a composite sensor that uses data from several physical sensors like the accelerometer and gyroscope and fuses that data via the Android Sensor Hub.
The feature is available to Samsung rivals, iPhone. On the iPhone, crash detection works by using a combination of sensors, including the accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. These sensors can detect sudden changes in motion, impact, and orientation, which can indicate that a crash has occurred. When a crash is detected, the iPhone will display an alert on the screen. You can then choose to call emergency services or cancel the call. If you don’t respond to the alert within a few seconds, the iPhone will automatically call emergency services.
It remains to be seen how Samsung will implement the feature and if it is also present on the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ models.
