T-Mobile is the fastest US mobile network, beats Verizon Wireless and AT&T-Ookla

T-Mobile, beats Verizon and AT&T as the fastest mobile network according to a report from Ookla which recently released data about which mobile network delivers the fastest upload and download speeds.

The report dubbed Speedtest Intelligence® reveals T-Mobile as the fastest top mobile operator in the United States during Q4 2023 with a median download speed of 188.96 Mbps on modern chipsets, a strong increase from 163.59 Mbps during Q3 2023. Verizon Wireless and AT&T were distant runners up, although both saw increases in median download speed.

Fastest Providers – Upload

T-Mobile had the fastest median upload speed among top mobile operators in the U.S. at 12.19 Mbps during Q4 2023. Verizon Wireless was second and AT&T finished third.

Median Multi-Server Latency

Calculating median multi-server latency for the three top mobile operators in the U.S. during Q4 2023, T-Mobile had the lowest latency at 50 ms. Verizon Wireless was a close second at 57 ms. AT&T was third at 64 ms. As latency becomes an increasingly important measure, we’ll be sure to watch latency metrics closely.

Consistency

In measuring the Consistency of each operator’s performance, we found that T-Mobile had the highest Consistency in the U.S. during Q4 2023, with 87.3% of results showing at least 5 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds. Verizon Wireless and AT&T followed at 83.7% and 81.3%, respectively.

Video Score™

In measuring the Video Score of each mobile operator’s video performance, we found that T-Mobile had the highest Video Score in the U.S. at 78.21 during Q4 2023. Verizon Wireless was second with 74.38 and AT&T was third at 71.25.

5G Video Score™

Looking at the 5G Video Score of each operator’s video performance over a 5G connection, T-Mobile had the highest 5G Video Score in Q4 2023 at 81.54. Verizon Wireless recorded a 5G Video Score of 79.67 and AT&T had a score of 73.32.

5G Performance

Looking only at tests taken on a 5G connection, T-Mobile had the fastest median 5G download speed in the U.S. at 238.87 Mbps during Q4 2023, an improvement on its performance during Q3 2023. Verizon Wireless remained second and continued to improve its median 5G performance, recording 196.43 Mbps in Q4 2023, up from 153.79 Mbps in Q3 2023. AT&T remained third, but also showed an increase, recording 125.73 Mbps in Q4 2023, up from 101.55 Mbps in Q3 2023.

5G Median Multi-Server Latency

Our mobile 5G multi-server latency results in Q4 2023 showed that among top providers, T-Mobile registered the lowest median 5G latency in the United States. Latency was a tight race, but our testing showed that with a median value of 48 ms, T-Mobile users saw better multi-server latency values than those of their nearest competitor, Verizon Wireless (52 ms).

In measuring the Consistency of each operator’s performance over a 5G connection in the U.S. during Q4 2023, we found that there was no statistical winner for highest 5G Consistency.

Device Information

Our analysis of the most popular devices in the U.S. during Q4 2023 showed that the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max recorded the fastest median download speed, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro. These two leading devices were followed by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and the iPhone 15.

Chipset Information

Looking at popular chipsets in the U.S., the Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 5G recorded the fastest median download speed during Q4 2023 at 205.38 Mbps.

Regional Speeds

At the state level, Illinois recorded the fastest median mobile download speed during Q4 2023 at 138.89 Mbps. It was followed by North Dakota in second place, Rhode Island in third, Minnesota fourth, and Nevada fifth.

Vermont had the slowest median download speed at 42.29 Mbps. Maine was next slowest, then Alaska, Wyoming, and Mississippi.

T-Mobile was the fastest mobile operator in 46 states and the District of Columbia during Q4 2023. Verizon was the fastest in North Dakota, GCI was fastest in Alaska, while results were too close to call in South Dakota and Vermont.
