Kenya’s journey towards sustainable waste management has taken a leap as the Sustainable Waste Innovation for a Future in Transition (SWIFT) programme, supported by the IKEA Foundation, has officially been launched in Nairobi.

The programme, spearheaded by Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC), aims to transform the waste management sector and foster job creation opportunities for youth and women across the country.

“SWIFT, a three-year initiative, is poised to revolutionize waste management by providing tailored support to 110 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating within the sector. Through innovative business models that embrace the principles of circular economy, SWIFT seeks to address pressing environmental challenges while promoting economic inclusivity,” KCIC noted.

The launch event, held at Nairobi, witnessed a remarkable turnout of stakeholders from various sectors, including national and county governments, private enterprises, development agencies, and waste management entrepreneurs.

Conversations and debates ensued, highlighting the collective commitment towards sustainable waste management practices in Kenya.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, the Chief Executive Officer at KCIC, Joseph Murabula emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving a circular, green, and inclusive economy.

He acknowledged the pivotal role played by partners and stakeholders in making SWIFT a reality and reiterated their dedication to driving positive change in Kenya’s waste management landscape.

Under the SWIFT programme, KCIC is calling for applications from SMEs operating in the waste management sector for either incubation or acceleration.

Selected enterprises will benefit from a range of support services, including business advisory, technical assistance, mentorship, access to finance, and advocacy for an enabling business environment.

The Accelerator Programme, a key component of SWIFT, offers entrepreneurs an 18-month tailored support aimed at accelerating their business growth and making them investor-ready. Eligible businesses must meet specific criteria, including legal registration in Kenya, operation within the waste management sector, a minimum of four years of operation, and revenues above $30,000 per annum.

Furthermore, selected enterprises must demonstrate a working prototype or minimum viable product, possess at least two years of certified audited book of accounts, and have created job opportunities for 5-20 employees.

Climate impact, innovation, scalability, and proof of market are also essential considerations for eligibility under the SWIFT Accelerator Programme.

With the launch of SWIFT, Kenya embarks on a transformative journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future, propelled by the collective efforts of stakeholders, entrepreneurs, and partners committed to driving positive change in waste management practices and fostering economic empowerment across the country.
