Equitel, a prominent mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), has announced the launch of 5G services in over 370 locations throughout Kenya, in partnership with Airtel to leverage existing network infrastructure.
The rollout of Equitel’s 5G services signifies a significant milestone in the company’s strategic expansion, aiming to enhance network speeds and meet the evolving demands of customers across the country.
Currently, the service is available in major towns such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu, with plans underway to expand coverage to high-density areas including shopping centers and business districts in the near future.
To access the new 5G service, customers will require a 5G-capable device equipped with a 4G LTE SIM card. Those currently using 3G SIM cards are advised to visit Equity branches to upgrade to a 4G SIM for compatibility.
Equitel, operated by Finserve Holdings, offers an integrated mobile telephony and banking platform, catering to diverse customer needs. Finserve, a subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings, provides additional financial services through its innovative solutions such as the Jenga API and Jenga Payment Gateway.
Equitel’s introduction of 5G services contributes to Kenya’s growing array of 5G providers. Safaricom led the way as the pioneer in October 2022, followed by Airtel’s entry into the 5G market in July 2023.
Equitel has not disclosed its 5G packages and rates. In comparison, Safaricom offers 5G packages starting at Sh 3500 for a 400GB monthly bundle, while Airtel’s packages begin at Sh 3000 for 300GB per month.
