Hormuud Telecom, a telecommunications firm headquartered in Somalia, has rolled out the 5G network in eight strategic locations nationwide.

Starting from March 21, 2024, the telco is providing complimentary upgrades to its current 4G subscribers.

Moreover, customers in Mogadishu, Kismayo, Galkayo, Baidoa, Dhusamareeb, Beledwayne, Afgoye, Merca, and Dhobley will enjoy expanded 5G coverage, reaching up to 81% in these regions.

“The newly introduced 5G service boasts impressive technical specifications, offering speeds ranging from 10Gbps to 400Gbps per single wavelength, with an overall capacity spanning from 0.96Tbps to 38Tbps,” reports indicate.

Notably, average data consumption per customer has surged to 5GB per month, a significant rise from the 1-2 gigabytes observed over the past two years.

In a statement, Jama Hassan Khalif, Somalia’s Minister of Telecommunication, lauded the launch as a momentous achievement for both Hormuud Telecom and the nation, highlighting Somalia’s commitment to progress and development.

This move signifies a pivotal juncture in Somalia’s digital journey, positioning the nation as a leader in telecommunications innovation.
