Mawingu, a rural-focused Internet Service Provider (ISP), has announced the expansion of its network to Mandera county, bringing the number of counties to 30 that the ISP has connected to its network across the country.

According to Mawingu’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Farouk RAMJI, “Mawingu marks yet another milestone towards our long-term vision of making meaningful connectivity accessible to more Kenyans at very competitive price points, comparative to other service providers, by building sustainable, flexible infrastructure in underserved regions.”

Mawingu has also enhanced its network coverage in Garissa County with an investment in fibre delivery infrastructure. The ISP will be laying more than 30 kilometres of fibre to improve its connectivity experience in the county.

Founded in 2012 in Nanyuki, Mawingu is a rural Internet Service Provider offering Internet connectivity by building sustainable, flexible infrastructure in underserved regions. Having connected more than 19,500 homes and businesses across 30 counties, Mawingu offers a series of shared Internet packages for homes and small businesses, as well as dedicated connections and services for large enterprises. Mawingu uses wireless, fibre, and smart green-energy technology and has a network transmission fabric comprised of 175 towers (base stations), which are backhauled directly to dedicated fibre trunks and/or high-capacity microwave links with diversity and high levels of redundancy built into the architecture. Mawingu is now focused on positively impacting 1,000,000 East Africans by 2028.

In May last year, the ISP announced it was adding 25 additional counties across Kenya after receiving a 1.12 Billion funding secured in February 2023. Recently, it connected Taveta Town and Siaya County bringing the number of counties to 29 that the ISP has connected to its network across the country.

“Our progressive expansion into more counties across Kenya, with a focus on providing meaningful Internet to these unserved and underserved areas has been largely informed by key learnings and strategic insights,”Mr. RAMJI adds.
