Open the document in Microsoft Word, choose File > Save As, and then choose PDF from the list of supported formats to convert it to a PDF. You may also convert a Word document to a PDF using LibreOffice or Google Drive.
When distributing documents, PDFs come in handy because they ensure that everyone sees them in the same way. Usually, you’ll use a different tool to produce documents, which you subsequently convert to PDF. This is a tutorial on turning a Microsoft Word document into a PDF.
Convert a Word Document to a PDF
The simplest approach to convert your document to a PDF in Microsoft Word is to use Word’s built-in functionality if you have the desktop version of the program installed on your Mac or Windows computer.
- Click the “File” tab after opening the document that has to be converted.
- Choose “Save As” from the choices on the left of the backstage screen.
- Next, choose the location for the PDF’s save (OneDrive, This PC, a specific folder, or anywhere else) from the Save As screen.
- In the “Save As Type” box, click the dropdown arrow on the right side and choose “PDF (*.pdf)” from the list.
- You now have the option to rename the file if you’d like. Once prepared, press the “Save” button.
- After saving the PDF, you’ll be returned to your Word document, and the new PDF will open automatically in your default PDF viewer.
If You Don’t Have Microsoft Word
You do have a couple options if you don’t have Word and you need to convert a document that someone handed you to a PDF:
- Google Drive: Word documents can be uploaded, saved as Google Documents, and subsequently converted to PDFs using Google Drive. If you already have a Google account and have a basic Word document that is primarily text with minimal formatting, this should work fairly well.
- A Conversion Website: There are a lot of sites out there that offer to convert Word documents to PDF for free. Our suggestion is freepdfconvert.com. The website is secure, operates quickly, and performs admirably on Word documents with even little formatting. If all you need to do is convert the odd Word document to PDF, it’s actually free. You can convert more types of files and do unlimited conversions (converting many documents at once) with a paid subscription.
- LibreOffice: LibreOffice is a free, open-source office app that offers a lot of the same features as Microsoft Office. Even Microsoft Word documents can be opened and converted to PDFs.
