Meta and This Is Digital have brought together 10 Kenyan startups developing artificial intelligence applications for local industries through the inaugural AI Academy Kenya Pitchathon, a competition offering two winning teams $5,000 each in equity-free funding.

Held on October 16 at The Social House in Lavington, Nairobi, the event marked the launch of a strategic partnership between Meta and the Nairobi-based AI accelerator. The programme focused on locally developed AI solutions addressing challenges in healthcare, education, retail, legal services and financial compliance.

In addition to the funding, the two winning teams are set to receive Meta advertising credits and invitations to pitch their solutions at Meta’s Regional AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, on November 24, 2026.

The initiative highlights the growing focus on applying artificial intelligence to specific operational problems, including healthcare access, local-language accessibility, business management and tax compliance.

Healthcare and education dominate startup cohort

Healthcare and education accounted for six of the 10 selected ventures, with developers targeting gaps in medical services, school management and assistive technology.

Neural Labs Africa is developing NeuralSight, a tele-radiology and AI diagnostic reporting platform, while Solivia Data is building AfyaEdge, which combines solar power with offline triage hubs. O.C.A. is focused on offline claims auditing software for insurance and Social Health Authority compliance.

In education, Jackfruit Network is developing data-driven advisory tools for low-fee private schools. Utter Africa is building a Kiswahili-first augmentative and alternative communication platform for nonverbal children with autism spectrum disorder, while Me-Nasoma uses text-to-speech technology to convert content into local Kenyan languages.

The remaining startups are focused on commercial operations, legal services and financial compliance.

TemboTrade is developing a unified AI commerce and enterprise resource planning platform for small and medium-sized businesses. JuaFlow automates workflows by connecting customer communications with business management systems.

HakiChain is developing an AI legal suite tailored to African law, with outputs grounded in legal citations. Sawazisha AI, developed by John Digital Solutions, uses WhatsApp to automate tax compliance by matching transactions with electronic tax invoices generated through Kenya’s eTIMS system.

The organisers have not disclosed the startups’ revenue, customer numbers or deployment scale in the supplied announcement.

Meta partnership targets local AI innovation

The pitchathon marked the formal launch of the partnership between Meta and This Is Digital, which works with global technology companies and regional enterprises on AI strategy, policy development and adoption across Africa.

The competition featured two pitching rounds judged by representatives from the technology industry, government and academia. The panel included Chinny Francis, Meta’s Policy Programs Manager for AI and Wearables; Gregory Wanjama, co-founder and CEO of This Is Digital; Isaac Hunja, founder and CEO of Kaara Works; Evan Gichuki, director of digital products and services at Kenya’s State Department of ICT; and Nathasha Nalyaka, a data scientist and lecturer at Strathmore University’s iLab Africa.

For the participating startups, the awards combine financial support with access to Meta’s advertising ecosystem and an opportunity to present their products at an international summit.

The Istanbul event is scheduled for November 24, extending the competition beyond Kenya and giving the two winning teams an opportunity to showcase their solutions to a broader technology audience.
