A new fund for documentary filmmakers has been set up by Docubox, an organization that aims to spur the creativity of East African Filmmakers.

The new fund has announced a call for applications for new projects, starting today, August 8th. Applicants need to be from Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda or a residence in these countries for at least 10 years.

“Docubox believes in supporting talented, driven, focused and accountable filmmakers tell stories that reflect the multiple realities of what it is to be an East African, especially in a region where support for creative documentary film is virtually non-existent,” the organization said.

“The fund seeks to enable independent filmmakers to produce unique films that unearth new realities (about worlds, identities and people) and cross-transnational lines.”

Independent filmmakers will be eligible for grants ranging from US$1,500 to US$20,000 to produce their documentaries.

“In addition, DOCUBOX will be hosting periodic screenings for audiences who love documentary films in an effort to build a community of documentary filmmakers, funders, commissioners and audiences,” they added.

The organization also aims to help documentary producers improve on their skills through this programme.  Docubox is expected to launch their website soon.
