Absa Bank Kenya Plc has signed marathon star Eliud Kipchoge as its Official World Tour Financial Partner, using the Kenyan runner’s international profile to bolster its brand as financial institutions compete for customer attention and loyalty.

The announcement comes two days after Kipchoge won the Melbourne Marathon in a course-record time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 10 seconds. The 41-year-old secured his first marathon victory since 2023, giving the bank a timely opportunity to associate its brand with the athlete’s return to the top of the podium.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The partnership will include customer experiences, leadership conversations, digital storytelling, wellness initiatives and community programmes, according to Absa. The bank said the activities would support its efforts to connect with customers, entrepreneurs and businesses across its Pan-African footprint.

For Absa, the agreement provides a platform to link its financial services with an athlete whose career has become synonymous with discipline, consistency and performance. Kipchoge has won two Olympic marathon gold medals and established himself as one of the most successful marathon runners in history.

The deal also gives the bank access to the international audience following Kipchoge’s World Tour, an initiative to run marathons on all seven continents over two years. The tour is designed to promote running globally and bring together running communities around the world.

Kipchoge’s international visibility could help Absa extend its brand beyond conventional banking campaigns, although the bank has not disclosed targets for customer acquisition, revenue growth or other financial returns from the partnership.

Yusuf Omari, managing director and chief executive officer of Absa Bank Kenya, said Kipchoge’s achievements reflected the potential of talent, discipline and purpose. He said the partnership would help the bank connect with individuals, entrepreneurs and institutions pursuing financial ambitions.

Mwihaki Wachira, Absa Bank Kenya’s marketing and corporate affairs director, said the bank believed individuals had stories worth investing in and could achieve extraordinary things with the right support.

Kipchoge said his relationship with Absa predated the agreement, describing himself as a long-time customer. He said the partnership would support his ambition to complete seven marathons across seven continents and promote running worldwide.

Absa operates in Kenya as part of Absa Group Ltd., a financial services group with operations across 12 African countries. The group provides retail, business, corporate and investment banking, as well as wealth management services.

The agreement adds to Absa’s efforts to use partnerships and storytelling to strengthen customer relationships. Its commercial impact will depend on the bank’s ability to translate the association into measurable engagement, customer retention and business growth.

Absa did not disclose the agreement’s duration, its cost or the commercial targets attached to the partnership.
