Safaricom Takes Hook Hip Hop Musical Auditions to Nakuru to Discover New Talent

Safaricom is taking its Hook Hip Hop Musical talent search across Kenya, with auditions in Nakuru giving aspiring performers a chance to showcase their abilities, receive coaching and compete for a place in the musical production.

Held at the Old Town Hall in Nakuru, the auditions attracted aspiring singers, dancers and actors aged 18 and above. The event followed earlier auditions in Kakamega, Embu and Kisumu as Safaricom Hook and Nairobi Performing Arts Studio expand the search beyond Nairobi.

One of the standout performers was Bruce Kiarie, who arrived hoping to demonstrate his dancing skills but discovered an unexpected talent for singing after receiving guidance from judge Hellen Mtawali, a performing arts practitioner.

“I came here ready to showcase what I can do, but I have also learned so much from the process and the people around me,” Kiarie said. “The judges helped me explore singing, something I did not think I could do well.”

Kiarie said being recognized among the top performers had encouraged him to continue developing his skills and pursue opportunities in the performing arts.

The auditions also include free practical workshops in acting, music and directing, led by experienced coaches. The sessions are designed to help emerging artists strengthen their craft, build confidence and explore opportunities in the creative industry.

Mtawali said judges were assessing more than individual performances, looking for versatility, potential and a willingness to learn.

“What is exciting about this platform is that it gives young creatives an opportunity to showcase what they can do while gaining practical skills that can help them grow,” she said. “The goal is not just to discover talent for the musical, but also to encourage performers to keep developing their craft and see a future for themselves in the creative industry.”

The Hook Hip Hop Musical combines singing, acting and dance in a production centered on the creativity and experiences of young people. Through its partnership with Nairobi Performing Arts Studio, Safaricom Hook aims to identify emerging performers for the production while giving them opportunities to develop their abilities.

The talent search will also feature original stories and behind-the-scenes content across Safaricom Hook’s social media platforms and Baze, allowing audiences to follow the auditions and participants’ journeys.

The initiative is built around the message “Game Iko On,” encouraging young people to showcase their abilities and pursue their ambitions. As the auditions continue across the country, the program seeks to connect emerging performers with opportunities to develop their skills and reach new audiences.
