The new Android version is called KitKat, confirms Google’s Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai. The naming of the new version marks the continuation of the company’s unconventional naming policy, as previous version 4.1 – 4.3 was called Jellybean, 4.0 was Icecream Sandwich and 3.0 was titled Honeycomb.

“Android is the operating system that powers over 1 billion smartphones and tablets. Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favourite chocolate treats, Kitkat!,” the company said on their website.

Pichai also made a small announcement in a simple Google+ message and Tweet. “It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody,”

in the same message channel he said that Android 4.4 KitKat is expected to be released in October this year.
