Africa’s drive towards a knowledge based economy is gradually becoming a reality. The number of research papers published in scientific journals with at least one author at an African institution increased by 316% between 1996 and 2012. Within the same period, Africa’s share of the world’s articles almost doubled from 1.2% to around 2.3%.
