Technovation is a global competition where young women work in teams to develop innovative mobile app “startup” businesses to solve real problems in their communities. Teams of young women  ages 10 to 23 are supported by a Technovation Teacher from womentheir school or local community and a Technovation Mentor from the technology, science, engineering, or business industry who together guide the teams through the basics of software development, user interface design, market research, and entrepreneurship. The program culminates in a World Pitch event where regional finalists compete to win $20,000 in funding for their apps.

Mentors work with a team of girls to guide them through each week of Technovation’s 12-week curriculum. Girls see their mentors as role models and look to them for guidance on how to overcome obstacles and solve problems when working on challenging projects. Some choose to work in teams of two and may choose to alternate attendance from one week to the next.

AkiliDada and Safaricom Women In Tech facilitated the 12 weeks event culminating today.
