South African Telecommunication Company, Telkom has partnered with the South African National Taxi Council (Santco) to make each taxi ride an exciting one by launching free Wi-Fi connections to taxis as well as mini-bus taxis in the whole country.

This exciting service is expected to begin today. For now the service is free to those travelling with the upgraded taxi services; it is said that the taxi organization would allow a multitude of partners and stakeholders to advertise on this particular platform. Revenue generated form this platform will be used in order to fund the project.

Buthelezi said that, “I believe that this project will contribute to the growth of the country in general. Furthermore, commuters will be able to access Wi-Fi at taxi ranks in order to look for jobs and socialize with their friends online.”

Phase 1 of the project is expected to equip around 1,500 taxis as well as 10 of the major major taxi ranks with Wi-Fi connectivity.

Buthelezi also stated that Santaco, in conjunction with Telkom, aimed to roll-out between 4,000-5,000 Wi-Fi equipped taxis each month.
