Kenya’s Kenyatta University Launches The KU Digital School

The second largest public university in Kenya, Kenyatta University (KU), has today launched its KU Digital School in a bid to address the increase demand for improved higher education e-Learning programs in Kenya.

The program demonstrates the institution’s understanding of the unique benefits and advantages of digital technology in the education sector. The key advantage of e-learning is to deliver training anytime, anyplace delivering cycle times than traditional classrooms-based instructions.

Professor Olive Mugenda, Kenyatta University’s Vice Chancellor said: “today we live in a  technologically-rich nation country where more than ever before, most of us, especially the younger generation are spending more time online and n more advanced and creative ways.”

The Digital School will benefit form a wide range of quality programme at Diploma, Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels through Open and Distance Learning modes that will be offered.

Dr. Fred Matiang’i, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Information and Technology said: “There has been a significant investment in ICT in the education sector which has resulted in technologically-enhanced teaching and learning approaches.”

Matiang’i also encouraged the university professors to create content of their own for the e-learning framework instead of borrowing most if them form the foreign systems. He said that most of the eastern African countries depend on Kenya when it comes to educational content as we are the market leaders.

“We have the content leadership  in the eastern Africa region, so all we have to do is to digitize our content and it will be used across the east African community,” he said.

All newly enrolled students at KU Digitla School will be provided with a free Tablet uploaded with registered units. Programmes will run on a trimester cycle, which means that students enrolled for the undergraduate programme will complete their studies within 3 calendar years.
