Alphabet Inc.’s Google launched a free online learning platform across Africa on Monday, aiming to train 3 million people in digital and artificial intelligence skills by 2030 as the continent faces a shortage of AI-ready workers.
The platform, called Skilling Africa with Google, consolidates more than 15 of the company’s existing training programs, including Hustle Academy, Google Career Certificates and Google Cloud Skills, into a single personalized hub. Users sign in with their Google accounts and don’t need to download an app.
Google said Africa is on the threshold of a $2.9 trillion AI-driven economic opportunity but is held back by infrastructure constraints and a talent gap. The company said more than 90% of companies report a shortage of AI-ready talent. The figures were provided by Google, and the announcement did not detail their sources.
The new target builds on Google’s previous efforts, which the company says have trained more than 7 million young Africans.
The platform is designed around barriers that limit digital learning in the region, including high data costs, unreliable connectivity, device limitations and language diversity. Learners can download short lessons over Wi-Fi and complete them offline. Content covers AI, cloud computing, entrepreneurship and career development.
Google is also introducing SCOUT, an AI study assistant that offers personalized learning support, alongside gamified features such as progress tracking, learning streaks and badges. The platform’s design reflects the practical realities facing many learners. Lessons are short and data-light, allowing users on limited bandwidth or basic devices to study in small sessions. Google’s single sign-on removes the need for an app store download, which could lower the barrier for first-time users across the continent.
“Our ambition to equip 3 million people by 2030 reflects our commitment to helping Africans build the skills they need to participate in and contribute to the digital economy,” said Alex Okosi, managing director of Google Africa.
