The director incharge of Engineering at Ghana’s National Communication Authority, Henry Kanor, stated that government of Ghana looses $40 million every year through the activities of by passing the Approved International Gateway (sim boxing).

This however, Kanor confirmed that it was in the 90s when the Internet Services Providers were given the authorization to operate, but through a very strong coordinated efforts with industry players, the judiciary and the Law Enforcement Agencies since 2010 have been able to wage war against the illegal termination of international traffic to Ghana.

‘This collaboration has led over the years to the arrest and prosecution of a number of illegal operators, a few of which have been reported in the media’ he said.

Speaking at the National Communication of Reporters Telecom Breakfast Forum on Sim boxing, Kanor explained that the authority among other things as a matter of urgency to deal with sim box fraud has embarked on instituting several measures including an international incoming traffic verification system, which has an in built fraud detection facility that detects the local numbers terminating the international traffic and further send its findings to telcos in the country to block them.

‘There is an Anti Fraud Task Force made up of the NCA, the telcos, the Police CID and the Attorney General Department responsible for the apprehension, arrest and prosecution of persons or entities involved in SIMBoxing and more recently the implementation of a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Guidelines for the timely dissemination and blocking of Fraud SIMs’ he added.
