Nairobi-based Ona and BRCK were yesterday listed in Time Magazine’s top 50 ‘Genius Companies’.
Ona, established in 2013, provides a digital mapping and analysis tool used by health workers based in rural areas to identify underserved and in need places, while BRCK has built a modem that enables internet users in rural communities to access fast internet in the absence of fiber networks.
The two were among the few companies from Africa that made it to the Genius companies list, with the others being South Africa’s AgriProtein, Ghana’s Bitland and Nigeria’s Babymigo.
The companies are listed alongside other major companies across the world including Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Airbnb, SpaceX, and Xiaomi. This is the first listing of innovative businesses to be run by the magazine.
The appearance of Kenyan companies on this list further entrenches Kenya’s position as a global tech hub.
