WhatsApp’s new terms and conditions could have severe consequences for iPhone owners: As restricting features if the terms and conditions are not accepted violates the App Store’s guidelines, you could remove the popular Messenger from the Apple user offering in the future.

WhatsApp has caused a stir among users by announcing new terms and conditions a few months ago. While at first there was even talk of users not being able to use Messenger at all, the developers now seem to be planning to gradually restrict functions if the terms and services are not approved.

As AppleScoop has now discovered, this could have far-reaching consequences for owners of an iPhone or iPad: According to WhatsApp’s feature restrictions, the feature restrictions on WhatsApp violate the Apple App Store’s guidelines, which in the long run could lead to the iPhone maker banning the popular Messenger from the store.

Are WhatsApp’s new terms and conditions violating Apple policies? What the iPhone maker says

The Apple guidelines state in the text:

“Apps should allow users to use the features they paid for without having to perform certain tasks such as posting on social media, uploading contacts, or a dedicated number of logins to the App. Apps should also not require the App to be evaluated or reviewable, watch videos, download other apps, click ads, enable tracking, or take similar actions to allow users to use the full functionality, content, the App, or access monetary or other compensation. This includes gift cards and coupon codes.”

As a result, Apple’s WhatsApp plans could be deemed a violation of the guidelines, which could ultimately result in the messenger app being removed from the App Store.

However, in this case, it is unclear whether Apple’s guidelines only apply to paid apps or free apps, including WhatsApp. The guidelines explicitly mention functions for which users have “paid.”
