Since its inception as the first major marathon attracting thousands of participants, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has held a special place in the Athletics Kenya calendar. The event has become the signature annual sports event and social event that brings runners and supporters from across the country, as well as foreign participants, to Nairobi, Kenya’s beautiful capital city and home to the world’s best distance runners.
Standard Chartered is inviting participants to sign up for the 2021 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.
The marathon registration fee is Ksh. 1,000. Participants who register will receive a pack that includes a running kit. All proceeds will benefit the #Futuremakers initiative, which aims to help young people learn, earn, and grow.
The marathon will use a hybrid format this year, with both physical and virtual participation.
Last year, the marathon was canceled due to unprecedented challenges posed by COVID-19 containment measures. The new hybrid format will combine the traditional mass participation physical race for elite runners only with a virtual option for the remaining participants.
The physical marathon will be limited to 2,500 local and international elite athletes on the Southern Bypass, with the marathon taking place at Carnivore Grounds.
The virtual marathon is targeting 13,500 participants to encourage active lifestyles among participants will be done between the 25th and 31st of October, 2021.
To participate, entrants must visit the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon website and pay the standard fee of Ksh. 1,000. Donations to the Future Makers Initiative are encouraged by clicking the donation buttons on the registration portal on the marathon website.
The day’s races will include 10 kilometers, 21 kilometers, 42 kilometers, and a 42-kilometer relay. The first race of the day will begin at 7:00 a.m.
To be chosen from among the 13,500 virtual participants, one must first download the Strava app. Then he or she must sign up for the challenge (5Kms, 10km, 21kms, 42kms, or 42kms relay). After completing the challenge, they will receive a reward that may include Strava virtual badges, slots for physical warm-up races, a year’s subscription to Strava, shopping vouchers, and LFC merchandise.
