With electric vehicles (EVs) becoming common place in many roads around the world, the need for fast charging stations is becoming greater. Queuing at a slow charging spot would really be inconveniencing during rush hours. ABB seems to have found a solution for this, meet the Terra 360.
Terra 360, as the name suggests, is a 360 kilowatt station system that promises to fully charge any EV in under 15 minutes. In fact, if one is really in a hurry, a three minute charge is enough to give an equivalent of 62 miles of range, that which is more than enough for most daily commutes. This performance effectively makes it the fastest charging station in the world.
For comparison, Tesla superchargers pumps out 250 kilo watts. Terra 360 can charge up to 4 vehicles at the same time, without reducing the charging speed of each outlet. The station has a system of lights that guides users through the process and shows the battery’s state of charge. A handy feature on the Terra 360 will show the estimated time before the charging session will end. The company has gone a step further to make the Terra 360 wheel chair accessible.
ABB also offers compact charging systems that fleet operators and logistics companies can install in house to quickly charge their trucks, vans and other vehicles without taking too much real estate.
In terms of availability, ABB plans to take Terra 360 global, starting with Europe by the end of this year. Next year, the company will expand the system to the US, Latin America and Asia.
