Rolls Royce teases its first production electric vehicle, the Spectre

The co-founder of Rolls Royce, Charles Rolls, first drove an electric car 120 years ago, it was developed by the brand called Columbia in the 1900, he loved the experience so much but he admitted the car was ahead of its time.

He said “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration, and they should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged. But for now, I do not anticipate that they will be very serviceable – at least for many years to come.”

And for many years indeed, fast forward a century and two decades later, his company is finally realizing his vision. Rolls Royce Spectre is the result, a Wraith – inspired vehicle that attempts to define ultimate luxury in electric vehicles (EVs)

The Rolls Royce 102EX Electric Vehicle prototype

This is not the first time the company has shown efforts in the EV sector. Back in 2011, the auto maker unveiled the 102EX, an experimental prototype based on the Phantom with two electric motors that produced 389 horsepower. The dual motors were powered by a 71-kWh battery, which offered 124 miles (200 kilometers) of range between charges.

Their second trial with EVs came 5 years later, it was the the 103EX, this one was mostly to showcase an extraordinary design that the company might consider in future when they fully go the electric route. The vehicle was massive stretching 19.4 feet or 5.91 meters.

The Rolls Royce Spectre

Coincidentally, 5 years later, we have the Spectre teased. This time round, the company fully intends on producing the car. The EV was shown in camouflage so it’s specific design features are intentionally hidden, however, the overall esthetics point to a Rolls Royce Wraith look alike. However, the automaker was quick to point out that the Spectre isn’t a Wraith running on electricity, it’s a whole unique vehicle with its own identity. Unlike the Wraith, this EV won’t be built on a BMW platform, it will be based on the same Architecture of Luxury akin to the new Phantom and Ghost.

In addition, the Spectre will be subjected to a comprehensive testing program. It will cover 2.5 million kilometers (1.55M miles) of work, that is more than any other Rolls Royce before it. To put this distance into perspective, it is equivalent to driving a Rolls for 400 years. The grueling test will involve traveling all over the world in an attempt to “push this new motor to the limit.”
