Safaricom launches drought relief initiative in Kenya: Here’s how you can help.

Pamoja Tuungane, a new project from Safaricom, has been launched today to inspire Kenyans to join together and help people who are suffering from the impacts of the extended drought. The telecom distributed rescue food to roughly 20,000 households in 23 Arid and Semi-Arid (ASAL) counties, in partnership with a number of other partners, at KICC.

Safaricom has set aside KES 100 million for relief food to commence the campaign. KCB Foundation, Naivas, Ernst & Young, Royal Media Services, Nation Media Group, Media Max, The Standard Group, and Radio Africa Group are among the strategic relationships they’ve formed. More businesses and civil society organizations are urged to join.

Naivas, a Kenyan grocery chain, pledged KES 20 million to the cause during the opening.

Furthermore, Naivas provides cheap food baskets that Kenyans may purchase and have delivered to Marsabit. As a partner, Ernst & Young will guarantee that every item and dollar provided is properly used and that every targeted home is reached.

All participants will be able to see a breakdown of the food items and monies in a report that will be made available to them. Safaricom will also collaborate with the State Department of Social Protection to guarantee that all donations are put to good use.

Subscribers to Safaricom may also give their Bonga points to this cause. Food products will be purchased with Bonga points. Simply ring *126# and choose “Bonga for Food” to give your Bonga Points. You will then be given the choice of entering any quantity of Bonga points or the specified amount of Bonga points. After you’ve made your selection, you’ll be prompted to enter your Service PIN to complete the purchase.
