Shell buys out Volta Charging company to expand its EV charging network

Shell wants to keep fueling your car, only this time, it is slowly building momentum from liquid fuels to electric charge. Today the company made another green purchase in the form of a company called Volta Charging

Volta Charging, based in the United States, was purchased by the petroleum giant for $169 million. Volta Charging is well-known for charge stations with large screens that display advertising. The advert revenues are then used to reduce customer charging fees. This could be why Volta came in second place, just behind Tesla, in the 2022 customer satisfaction survey. The company is quite astute in terms of where it instals charging stations, primarily in shopping malls and retail parking facilities. It is actively present in 31 US states, where it has installed 3,000 charge points, with another 3,400 installations planned.

Shell is quietly abandoning its image as an oil company in favour of becoming an energy company. It already owns Greenlots – which was later renamed to Shell Recharge. Greenlots plus Volta gives Shell over 57,000 charging stations though the goal is to operate 500,000 EV charging stations worldwide by 2025.
