Safaricom has introduced a new payment option called ‘Lipa na Data.’

This service allows Safaricom customers with 5GB or more of data balance to make payments for goods and services using their internet data balance.

Customers can dial *544*34# to access the service and make payments at shopping outlets through Paybill or till numbers.

“Both Safaricom post-pay customers with a data balance of 5GB or more and prepaid customers with ‘no expiry’ bundles above 5GB can use this feature,” the telecommunication company noted.

According to reports by Business Daily, the launch of ‘Lipa na Data’ is part of Safaricom’s efforts to reduce liabilities and increase the redemption of its loyalty program, known as Bonga Points, to generate more revenue.

When customers dial the payment request code, the bundle calculator displays the bill amount in Kenyan shillings equivalent to their data bundle balance.

The user can then choose to proceed with the payment or decline.

If a customer’s data balance is below 5GB, they will be notified that they are not eligible for the service.

“This new payment option complements Safaricom’s existing payment plans, such as direct payments from the user’s deposits and the Fuliza overdraft service for customers with insufficient funds.”

Safaricom has been focusing on revenue optimization and recently expanded its 5G network coverage to all 21 counties in Kenya.

The company also introduced the Fuliza overdraft service for businesses.

Despite a decline in full-year profits, Safaricom remains committed to investments, including the Ethiopian venture, which has contributed to the decline in profits.
