Bboxx collaborates with MTN to increase smartphone access in Rwanda

Bboxx and MTN Rwandacell PLC have formed a strategic partnership in Rwanda to address the obstacle of low smartphone penetration, which hinders the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.

Despite having 99% network coverage, Rwanda’s current smartphone penetration rate stands at only 23.5%, according to reports.

“To tackle this issue, Bboxx will utilize its pay-as-you-go smartphone service called Bboxx Connect to offer a more accessible and convenient payment method for Rwandan citizens.”

The partnership will also involve connecting Bboxx’s existing suite of Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled household appliances with telecommunications services provided by MTN Rwanda.

Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bboxx, Mansoor Hamayun expressed that the collaboration with MTN Rwanda signifies their dedication to unlocking potential through technological innovation.

By leveraging MTN Rwanda’s wide reach, Bboxx aims to expand the affordability and accessibility of smartphones to customers throughout Rwanda.

Mr Hamayun added that this partnership is not only an innovative business collaboration but also a significant step in global efforts to bridge the digital divide and provide affordable, life-changing technology to all.

Both Bboxx and MTN Rwanda will combine their expertise and shared vision to make essential technology more accessible for all Rwandans, contributing to bridging the digital divide and connecting previously unconnected communities to the internet.

CEO of MTN Rwanda, Mapula Bodibe emphasized that their belief in providing the benefits of a modern connected life to everyone aligns with their partnership with Bboxx.

This collaboration represents a substantial stride toward bridging the digital divide by expanding access to affordable smartphones across the country.

Together, they are committed to creating a more connected world, enabling individuals and communities to access the power of the internet and thrive in the digital age.

This initiative aligns perfectly with the existing goal of the Rwandan government and MTN Rwanda to ‘Connect Rwanda’ by ensuring that every household in the country has access to a smartphone.
