South African transportation data company, WhereIsMyTransport, has declared the cessation of its operations due to unsuccessful efforts to secure additional funding.

Devin De Fries, the founder of this eight-year-old mobility startup confirmed this decision through a LinkedIn post, citing the closure as a consequence of their inability to obtain further financial support.

The company had previously achieved notable success by raising over $27 million in funding, expanding its presence to 140 locations across 22 countries and maintaining a workforce of approximately 200 employees.

WhereIsMyTransport specialises in the mapping of both formal and informal public transportation networks, utilizing the gathered data to enhance the overall public transportation experience.

Their mission was to create safer and more accessible commuting options, and the startup also offered data licensing services to governments.

In May 2022, the company reported that it had mapped 50 cities across Africa, Latin America, Southeast Europe, and Asia.

One of its prominent clients was the World Bank, which used the startup’s data to evaluate access to job opportunities through public transportation in 12 African cities.

WhereIsMyTransport had previously been associated with Naspers Foundry, which is now no longer operational and had secured $3 million in funding from the fund as part of its $14.5 million Series A extension.

The startup’s investor base included Cathay AfricInvest Innovation Fund, SBI Investment from Japan, Wuri Ventures, Capria Ventures, Nedbank, Global Innovation Fund, Goodwell Investments, Google, and Toyota Tsusho.
