In a significant development for the clean energy transition, California-based mining exploration company KoBold Metals has announced the discovery of a massive copper deposit in Zambia.

Backed by prominent figures like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, the find is being hailed as one of the largest in the country’s history and a potential game-changer for the global copper market.

Located in the northern Copperbelt province, the Mingomba deposit holds the potential to become one of the world’s top three high-grade copper mines, according to KoBold Metals.

The company leverages artificial intelligence to create detailed geological maps, aiding in the identification of critical minerals like copper, lithium, cobalt, and nickel. This technology played a crucial role in pinpointing the Mingomba deposit.

The discovery comes at a critical time for the copper industry. The metal is essential for renewable energy infrastructure and electric vehicles, both key components of the fight against climate change. Demand for copper is expected to surge in the coming years, and the Mingomba deposit could play a vital role in meeting this demand.

“This discovery is a testament to the power of innovation and technology in driving the clean energy transition,” said Josh Goldman, President of KoBold Metals. “The Mingomba deposit has the potential to create significant benefits for Zambia, both economically and environmentally.”

The development of the Mingomba mine is estimated to cost around $2 billion and could begin production by the early 2030s. KoBold Metals has yet to conduct a pre-feasibility study, which will provide a clearer picture of the project’s economic viability.

The discovery has been met with enthusiasm by the Zambian government, which sees it as an opportunity to boost the country’s copper production and attract further investment.

President Hakainde Hichilema is reported to set an ambitious goal of tripling Zambia’s copper output by 2032, and the Mingomba deposit could significantly contribute to achieving this target.

However, concerns have been raised about the potential environmental and social impacts of the mine. Responsible mining practices and transparent collaboration with local communities will be crucial to ensuring that the benefits of the Mingomba deposit are shared equitably and sustainably.
