OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research organization, is embarking on a new phase of expansion with the addition of three distinguished members to its Board of Directors.
Confirming this via their official blog post, Dr Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Nicole Seligman, former EVP and General Counsel at Sony Corporation, and Fidji Simo, CEO and Chair of Instacart, are joining the board.
Additionally, Sam Altman, CEO, will be rejoining the board.
“The newly appointed board members bring a wealth of experience in leading global organizations and navigating complex regulatory landscapes, with backgrounds spanning technology, nonprofit, and board governance. They will collaborate closely with current board members Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, and Bret Taylor, as well as Sam and OpenAI’s senior management,” the AI firm announced.
Bret Taylor, Chair of the OpenAI board, expressed enthusiasm about the new additions, stating, “I am excited to welcome Sue, Nicole, and Fidji to the OpenAI Board of Directors. Their experience and leadership will enable the Board to oversee OpenAI’s growth, and to ensure that we pursue OpenAI’s mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.”
Dr Sue Desmond-Hellmann is a renowned non-profit leader and physician, with previous roles including CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Professor and Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She brings extensive experience in both the healthcare and nonprofit sectors to the board.
Nicole Seligman is a globally recognized corporate leader and lawyer, having held senior positions at Sony Corporation and serving on multiple public company corporate boards. Her expertise in legal and compliance matters, as well as her nonprofit leadership roles, will be invaluable to OpenAI.
Fidji Simo, a veteran of the consumer technology industry, currently leads Instacart and serves on the Board of Directors at Shopify. With her background in product development and strategy, particularly in the realm of social media and consumer technology, she brings a unique perspective to the board.
