Kenya has launched new number plates following an earlier announcement by the government through the Interior CS Fred Matiangi and other transport regulators to introduce digital number plates for vehicles.

This development is also part of the Traffic Act 2016 which has a cause for security agencies to track vehicles in case they are suspected to have been part of a crime or illegal activity.

The new number plates which will cost kes 3000 to replace have received two notable features including security features which will allow law enforcement agencies to track vehicles. The security feature is a Microchip that can be read by security agencies remotely

The second feature includes an aesthetically easy-to-read font design on the plates.

The plates come with a QR Code, the Kenyan flag and the NTSA serial number. The plates will also serve 12 categories if vehicles.

The new plates will be put on all imported vehicles at their point of entry into the country. Also, the same exercise will see direct synchronization with KRA to help the agency track tax evaders including businesses that import and sell vehicles.

Vehicle owners have been given 18 months to switch their current plates to new ones in compliance to the law. Each plate will cost them KES 3000.
